DIXFIELD (AP) – A Peru man will likely face an attempted murder charge in the stabbing of his ex-wife on the day he learned that their divorce had become final, police said Saturday.

Dwayne Childs, 42, was charged with aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon Friday after Mildred Childs, 43, suffered multiple stab wounds at her Dixfield apartment.

Police Chief Richard Pickett said the charge against Dwayne Childs would probably be elevated to attempted murder.

Mildred Childs underwent surgery after being airlifted to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Pickett said she suffered serious injuries to the abdomen but was expected to survive.

Dwayne Childs was transferred to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center with self-inflicted stab wounds, police said.

Pickett said Childs’ initial court date was up in the air. “Right now, it’s all based on his medical condition,” the chief said.

The stabbing stemmed from an argument that occurred when Childs arrived at his ex-wife’s apartment Friday after receiving documentation that the final divorce decree had been issued.
