FARMINGTON – They’ll be jackhammering concrete Monday in search of a 1976 time capsule. Even if it’s found, it will not be opened until 2026 and again in 2076.
Amateur sleuths town secretary Linda Grant and Town Manager Richard Davis have been searching since April for a time capsule that was supposed to be buried in 1976 in front of the then-new Municipal Building/Fire Station.
A photo of a mock burial of the capsule, prior to a flagpole being installed, during the dedication of the new building was printed in a newspaper. At the time, the capsule wasn’t quite ready to be buried but was expected to be a short time later.
Grant has compiled notes on the search and noted that some people say they saw the capsule with a metal top welded closed, which was buried eventually near the flagpole or in the flagpole shaft.
Grant said Friday that the concrete that the public works crew will jackhammer near the flagpole base is in need of repair.
If located, the capsule wouldn’t be opened now because of a stipulation that it only be opened 50 years later and then 100 years from 1976, when the building was dedicated, Grant said.
Once it’s found, a bronze plaque would be placed to mark the space where the capsule is buried for whoever opens it.
