CANTON – Saturday’s rain may have canceled some of the activities of the 2nd annual Canton Summerfest, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the small crowd that gathered to watch the skillet toss, check out the craft and flea market items and sample the chicken barbecue.

“The weather was bad this morning so we canceled the band, but people seem to be having fun,” said Canton Fire Chief Wayne Dube.

More than 30 women tested the strength of their throwing arms trying to see how far they could toss an approximately 10-pound cast-iron skillet. The champion was Rita Bettney with a distance of 45.2 feet. Bettney received a T-shirt from Dube proclaiming her “Skillet Toss Champ 2003.”

Several crafters gathered in the Municipal Building selling items ranging from quilted wall-hangings, hot pads and other items from Donna Davis and Pam Martin’s “Oh Sew Fine” of Leeds and the handmade soaps of Celestial Soaps and Gifts of Gray to the teddy bears of K-T Creations and hand-crafted knickknack shelves, cabinets and more of Virgin Woodworks of Carthage.

The Canton 4-H Club, under the guidance of Gladys Conant, was selling plants in hand-painted pots.

“It’s been kind of a slow day,” said Conant, the leader of the group.

Flea market items were also available at the Municipal Building and at the ball field.

Other events included a fireman’s muster featuring two teams from the Canton Fire Department and a team from the Canton Lures Women’s softball team; a dunk tank staffed by volunteers; a mock mayoral election; and a pie baking contest.

Elected as honorary mayor of Canton was Pastor Scott Verrill of the Church of God in Canton. He was presented with a T-shirt by Dube proclaiming him “Honorary Mayor 2003-2004.”

Pie contest judges Dube, Don Shink and Dan Pelletier sampled seven pies, judging them on appearance and taste. Winning for her one-crust strawberry pie was Flossie Haines. In the two-crust category, apple pie seemed to be the pie of choice with all winners submitting their various versions of this American favorite. First-place winner was Marilee Verrill, second place was awarded to Kelly Adams and third-place winner was Ben Conant.

All money raised from the event except from the craft items will be used to purchase a four-wheel drive vehicle for the Fire Department.
