LEWISTON – Lewiston’s Department of Recreation and Parks has released its 2003-2004 Seasonal Sports and Activities Directory.

Summer offerings include Camp Smiles for 5- to 12-year-olds (registration still open), track, basketball, tennis, aquatics, softball and a multi-site playground program.

The directory also notes that once again this year the Recreation and Parks Multi-Purpose Center site will offer a Summer Literary Playground Program for children in kindergarten through six.

The directory also gives an overview of other recreational programs such as co-ed volleyball and fall gymnastics; after-school programs; dance classes; Lewiston Senior Citizens programs; and SeniorsPlus programs. Other community event and independent nonprofit sport program information is also included.

“We are excited about this directory, as it provides a detailed listing of the many seasonal opportunities for our citizens. It is our hope that this publication will encourage citizens to participate in one or more of our fun-filled activities,” said Maggie Chisholm, recreation director.

The directory also outlines registration policies and provides an in-depth look at the department’s free drop-in playground program.

Each playground site, Sunnyside Park, Tall Pines Park, Lionel Potvin Park, Couture Center, Montello School and Farwell School, has two to three supervisors trained in safety, basic first aid, discipline skills and conflict resolution. The supervisors plan a variety of organized activities, sporting events and arts and crafts projects that occur on a daily basis.

The new directory will be distributed through Lewiston public and private schools (grades kindergarten through six) and are also available at the Lewiston Recreation Department, 65 Central Ave. For more information, call the Rec Department at 782-5951 or visit http://ci.lewiston.me.us/recreation/index.htm.
