WINTHROP – Winthrop Center Friends Church will sponsor a pot roast supper on Friday, June 20, to benefit the Kakamega, Kenya, AIDS Orphan Project, a feeding program started by the Quaker church in Kakamega.
More than 100 children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic go to the church to be fed. Members have been bringing beans, rice and vegetables to the church and the women have been preparing the food in large pots over an open fire.
Maine and other New England Quakers have responded to their needs for funds and support by visiting, organizing work parties and fund-raising. Enough money has been raised for a single-story dining room to be built.
Money is needed to equip a kitchen and bathroom (open fires and latrines are in use at the moment) and the hope is to add a second story to the building as a dormitory. Funds are also needed for schooling and medical care for the children.
The cost of materials in Kenya is low, and school fees are between $250 and $400 a year.
All profits from the supper will be donated to the project.
