AUBURN – Fairview Elementary School has new leadership.
The Auburn School Committee voted Wednesday night to hire Catherine Folan, a veteran teacher and administrator, as principal of Fairview. It also voted to hire Terrence Young, a southern Maine middle school teacher, to serve as assistant principal.
Folan, 51, served as principal and assistant principal at Sabattus Elementary School for four years and as an elementary school teacher for 19 years. She is currently principal of West Bath School, a 140-student elementary that serves West Bath students from kindergarten through grade six.
A Lewiston native, Folan said she was drawn to the Auburn school system’s large size and to Fairview’s reputation.
“That’s all I’ve heard, wonderful things about Fairview,” she said.
Folan said she has no immediate plans to make changes to the 500-student elementary school. Instead, she wants to spend time getting to know the students, their parents and the school’s community.
“I plan to do a lot of listening and see where that takes me,” she said.
Folan replaces Thomas Morrill, who will become Auburn’s new assistant superintendent this summer.
Although Folan won’t officially start serving as Fairview’s principal until Aug. 1, she was part of the hiring process for the school’s new assistant principal.
Young was hired by the School Committee Wednesday. He is currently serving as a teacher at Windham Middle School.
