LEWISTON – Two graduating seniors at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College were honored recently for their service-learning accomplishments. They are Julie Eastman of Sumner and Jolaine Galibois-Barss of Hallowell.

Eastman was cited for her efforts in bringing the “Healthy Learners” Project to SAD 39 in Hartford. Her presenter, Dr. Robert Baskett, said, “Julie has successfully integrated skills from training sessions and scholarly writings into classroom discussion and contributed to the supervision process in class, thus enriching both her own service and the service of others in providing the Healthy Learners intervention.”

Along with fellow student Sherie Ellis, she was also successful in obtaining a grant that will benefit special needs children at Turning Point Farm.

Galibois-Barss, a student in the CLASS teacher education program, was cited for her efforts at the Auburn Middle and Sherwood Heights schools in developing and implementing successful service learning projects in a variety of activities to benefit the community.

“Jolaine worked very hard throughout the year in her classroom placements to embody the characteristics of a future teacher-leader in the school setting,” said Dr. Bumper White, CLASS program coordinator. “Using service learning projects in the classroom is one such characteristic of effective teaching and leadership as it encourages the children to take a larger view of what it means to serve.”
