1918 – 2003
NORWAY – Herbert Holmes Lyon, 84, of Bryant Pond died Wednesday, June 18.
He was born Sept. 1, 1918, at Woodstock, Conn., the son of George and Bernice (Bateman) Lyon. He was educated at Southern Maine Vocational/Technical Institute and had worked for 20 years as a homebuilder and cabinetmaker.
He was later employed by Central Maine Power as an instrument mechanic at Cousins Island in Yarmouth for 22 years retiring in 1980 and moving to Gore Road, Woodstock.
He married Mary Briggs in Spokane, Wash., on Oct. 2, 1943. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army 82nd General Hospital as a medical and surgical technician in the European Theatre of Operation.
He was a member of the Locke Mills Union Church of Greenwood, was past commander and life member of Jackson-Silver Post 68 American Legion of Locke Mills, active in the Jefferson Lodge 100 A.F. & A. M. and OES 89 of Bryant Pond, Scottish Rites Body of Jacksonville, Fla., and the Kora Temple Shrine of Lewiston and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Association.
He was a registered Maine Guide for over 25 years and a Certified Instructor for Hunter Safety and Trapping Courses for the Maine Fish and Wildlife Department including Firearms instructor.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years; two sons, Ellsworth D. of Dudley, Mass., and George R. of Nashua, NH; one daughter, Grace Dixon and her husband Wayne of Alachua, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
