POWNAL – Winnifred Elizabeth Carter, 81, of 577 Hodsdon Road, Pownal, died peacefully at her daughter’s home on Thursday, June 19.

She was born in Pownal on May 16, 1922, a daughter of Thomas J. and Abbie (Pervier) Vosmus. She attended Pownal schools and graduated from North Yarmouth Academy.

“Winnie” will be remembered for her giving and loving nature toward her family and friends and for her sense of humor, resourcefulness, energy, and enthusiasm. Through the years, the family has gathered for many holiday dinners, outings, and camping trips.

She especially enjoyed inviting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren for overnight visits and special trips. She was an active member of the Pownal Congregational Church, having served as a Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent of Sunday school, a Youth Leader and Church Treasurer.

She served as president of the Ladies Aid Society for several years and headed up many committees. Her many contributions to the church baked bean suppers will be greatly missed. She was a member of Granite Grange for over 64 years, holding many offices, most recently lecturer.

She spent most of her years as a homemaker and was employed at L.L. Bean from 1969 to 1979. She enjoyed reading, sewing, needlework, and crafts and seldom missed solving the puzzles featured in her daily newspaper.

She is survived by a son, Ralph A. Carter and his wife Nancy of Auburn; a daughter, Doris Blackstone and her husband Arnold of Pownal; seven grandsons; one granddaughter; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Sanders and Vina Litchfield both of Pownal; two brothers, Thomas H. Vosmus and his wife Virginia of Pownal and Kenneth Vosmus and his wife Polly of Freeport; and a sister-in-law, Jo Vosmus of Pownal.

She was predeceased by her husband of over 50 years, Lawrence E. Carter, who died in December of 1993; and a brother, Ralph Vosmus.
