PHILLIPS – Twenty individuals came out for the Children’s Golf Scramble recently and raised $239 to support the youth activities center, the ZONE.
At 11 a.m. on June 1 “to play or not to play” was the decision facing Winona Davenport, organizer of the benefit golf tournament for children, and Ethel Bardsley, who with her husband Russ, own and operate the Sandy River Golf Course in Farmington Falls.
According to forecasts the day was supposed to be a washout, but a comment by 5-year- old Ryan Pratt that “rain doesn’t hurt anybody” prompted the decision to go ahead despite sprinkles and occasional showers.
Some of the children ranging in age from 5 to 13 had never played a full nine holes. With parents, grandparents and friends, they learned what it was like on a real course. The children played from a designated spot approximately 100 yards back from the pin and were given other advantages. Adults played the usual game from the regular tees.
Trophies provided by Art and Michelle Lage of Shadagee Farm in Phillips were presented to winners.
Children winning trophies were: first with a score of 43, Sam Whittle of New Vineyard; second with a score of 49, Shawn Andrews of Farmington; and third in a tie with 54 each were Alex Shaw and Brandy Pingree, both from Kingfield.
Adults winners were: first, Reid Bond with a score of 35 tied with Steve West, both from Farmington; third, Cindy Pratt of New Sharon with 41; and fourth Scott Pratt of New Sharon with 45.
Prizes of shirts, hats, mugs and many more items were presented to all the competitors by co-chairwoman of the Zone Gillian Trapp of Madrid, who thanked all participants for their support.
Lunches of hot dogs, chips and soda served, stroke counters and beginner rule books were presented by Winona Davenport of Phillips, organizer of the event.
In support of the inaugural event, Sandy River Golf Course donated the greens fee to the Zone.
The next tournament is scheduled for Sunday, July 27, “rain or shine.”
