I am very disappointed with the city of Auburn and its maintenance of Oak Hill Cemetery.

I have been going to the family burial plot there for 59 years. Never have I seen it in the condition it was in this past Memorial Day. The grass was six inches tall and many headstones had been toppled over.

Mind you, my father paid for perpetual care, believing that it would be maintained after he passed away.

I called the Auburn City Building after Memorial weekend and talked with a lady in the city clerk’s office. I voiced my concerns and she replied that there has been a lot of rain and shortage of manpower.

I know we’ve had rain, but I’m quite sure the mowing could have been done.

As far as manpower, the city could have used some of the men who maintain our beautiful parks and walkways along the river which, by the way, decent people hesitate to use because of undesirables there.

My husband and I revisited last weekend. To our dismay, nothing had been done and the grass is approximately a foot high now. Also, the building on the premises is falling apart, shingles coming off the roof and bags of beer cans in the driveway.

It is very sad to see this disrespect of our loved ones. It is great to see the city’s improvement for the future, but we must remember and respect our past so that our younger ones will have an example to go by.
