Crews to begin Court Street demolitions

Drivers who sleep late Monday morning should miss traffic snarls from Lewiston projects along Plourde Parkway and East Avenue.

“It doesn’t happen too often, but we try and schedule some work overnight when we can,” said Public Works Director Dave Jones. “But we always get some early risers and Bath Iron Works traffic.”

Those early risers should plan for some slowing at those intersections. Crews were scheduled to begin resurfacing the pavement Sunday on Plourde Parkway just south of Lisbon Street and on East Avenue from Lisbon through Montello streets.

It’s the start of a busy week for Lewiston streets. Crews will be grinding Montello Street from Main Street east to Old Greene Road getting it ready for paving the week of July 7. The bulk of Lafayette Street southwest of Russell Street and part of Ferry Road are scheduled for the same thing, Jones said.

Crews have about three weeks of work left in a paving and sidewalk project along Lincoln Street, and sewer system work on College Street between Sabattus and Union streets has several more weeks to go. Crews should be wrapping up the paving work on Adams Street between Park and Bartlett streets next week.

Crews are also continuing storm-sewer work along Walnut Street between Howard and Horton streets.

In downtown Lewiston, crews are scheduled to begin pouring curbs and gutters as a part of the new Park Street parking garage

Jones said contractors are scheduled to begin installing traffic lights along East Avenue at the southern entrance to Lewiston High School this week.

“They shouldn’t be stopping traffic, but they may be slowing it,” Jones said. “Drivers should be aware. They may have to drive around that work.”

Demolition plans

Crews should begin tearing down the wooden structure at 18 Court St., Auburn, on Saturday, according to City Engineer Steve Ranney. That should close one lane of Court Street before it crosses the Longley Bridge to Lewiston, he said.

Ranney said he expects the work to go smoothly, like the demolition of the gray cinder-block building on Court Street two weeks ago.

“They closed one lane of Court Street, but I haven’t heard any complaints,” he said. “That’s part of why they have it planned for a Saturday. They’ll miss all that weekday traffic.”

Crews are continuing work installing new storm-sewer lines on Court Street this week, Ranney said. That project still has several weeks to go.

“Once they get the pipe in they can get the street restored,” he said.

Crews have about two weeks left in the Western Avenue road reconstruction and should put the finishing touches on Jefferson Avenue work this week.

Road closure

The portion of High Street from Minot Avenue to Academy Street in Auburn will be closed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday while Guilford Industries updates the railroad crossing and Auburn Public Works completes work on the catch-basin and drainage pipes. Drivers can use Elm Street as an alternate route.
