Summer reading

MEXICO – The Mexico Public Library will be offering a summer reading program once again this summer for children ages 2-14. The program will run from Monday, June 23, through Friday, Aug. 22. The theme of the program is “Be a Reader.” The reading program will be incentive-based. Depending on the participant’s age, for a specified amount of time spent reading either by oneself or with an adult, incentive coupons will be offered. These coupons are for treats donated by local businesses. This type of program allows each participant to read at their own pace. By keeping track of time spent reading, kids can be earning incentive points even while away on vacation or at camp. Interested children can sign up at the library anytime during business hours. When signing up, each participant will receive a “Be a Reader!” packet. The packet will contain a reading log, bookmark, stickers, pencil and a recommended reading list. At the conclusion of the program in August, the library will hold a special event with entertainment and food. Prizes will be awarded to readers who have accumulated the most reading time over the summer. The preschool story and craft hour for children ages 2-5 will continue every Tuesday at 10 a.m. throughout summer. In addition, a summer story and craft hour for children ages 6-10 will be added. This group will meet at 1 p.m. every Tuesday. For more information call the library at 364-3281.
