TORONTO – Carlos Delgado increased his major league-leading RBI total to 80, and Shannon Stewart had three hits and a homer in his return from the disabled list as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 13-4 on Monday night.
Delgado went 3-for-4 with a walk and four RBIs for the Blue Jays, who lead the majors in batting average, runs, total bases, hits, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. Toronto has won six of seven to move within one game of the New York Yankees in the AL East.
The Blue Jays are 12 games over .500 for the first time since August 13, 1999.
Delgado, who hadn’t driven in a run in his previous six games, tied the club record for most RBIs before the All-Star break. Joe Carter had 80 in 1994, and Delgado had 80 in 2000.
Stewart led off the bottom of the first with a homer – his first at-bat in almost a month. Stewart had missed 20 games because of a sore right hamstring.
Expos 3, Pirates 0
MONTREAL – Rookie Claudio Vargas allowed three hits in eight innings and Edwards Guzman hit his first home run in nearly two years, leading the Montreal Expos to a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night.
Making his 11th start since he was recalled from Triple-A Edmonton on April 24, Vargas (4-3) allowed singles to Aramis Ramirez and pitcher Jeff Suppan, and a double to Matt Stairs.
Guzman, whose contract was purchased from Edmonton on June 7, connected off Suppan (5-7) with one out in the third for his first homer since Aug. 9, 2001, with San Francisco at Cincinnati.
Vargas, acquired from Florida along with Cliff Floyd last July 11, was perfect in the first, fourth and fifth. He walked one, hit two batters with pitches and struck out two, matching his longest outing.
Devil Rays 4, Yankees 2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Victor Zambrano allowed five hits in seven innings and Damian Rolls homered twice off Roger Clemens as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the New York Yankees 4-2 to stop a five-game losing streak Monday night.
Zambrano, who pitched eight scoreless innings against the Yankees last week in a game in which Clemens took a no-hitter into the eighth, struck out six and walked four after falling behind 1-0 on Alfonso Soriano’s 20th homer on the first pitch of the game.
Travis Harper pitched the eighth for Tampa Bay and Lance Carter worked the ninth to earn his 12th save in 16 opportunities. The Yankees’ winning streak ended at four games.
Rolls went 3-for-3 against Clemens (7-5) and had a career-high four RBIs.
Clemens, who lost his bid for a no-hitter last Wednesday when Tampa Bay’s Marlon Anderson singled with one out in the eighth, went seven innings and allowed five hits, struck out six and walked two in his second start since getting his 300th career victory on June 13. He dropped to 300-156 in his career.
Athletics 3, Rangers 1
ARLINGTON, Texas – Scott Hatteberg hit a three-run double in the ninth inning to give the Oakland Athletics a 3-1 win over Texas on Monday night, extending the Rangers’ losing streak to eight games.
The Athletics trailed 1-0 heading into the ninth but loaded the bases with no outs against closer Ugueth Urbina.
Ramon Hernandez doubled to lead off the ninth for Oakland and Billy McMillon followed with a walk. Mark Ellis then laid down a sacrifice bunt, which Urbina fielded and threw to first, but first baseman Mark Teixeira dropped the ball, loading the bases.
One batter later, Hatteberg cleared the bases with a double to right-center, giving the Athletics their ninth victory in 10 games.
It was the fourth blown save for Urbina (0-3) in 22 chances.
Ricardo Rincon (4-3) pitched a hitless eighth to earn the win. Keith Foulk threw a perfect ninth for his 20th save in 23 opportunities.
The ninth-inning rally also prevented Texas from beating Oakland starter Barry Zito for the first time in 15 tries.
Zito had been 9-0 with a 2.50 ERA in 93 2-3 innings against the Rangers entering the game. He allowed four hits over six innings, while striking out three and walking four, and was on the hook for the loss before Hatteberg’s double.
Texas got the game’s first run in the sixth when Zito began having control problems after walking only one in the first five innings.
Zito issued a leadoff walk to Michael Young, gave up a bunt single to Carl Everett, and walked Alex Rodriguez to load the bases. After Zito got Juan Gonzalez on a popup, he walked Rafael Palmeiro to force in a run.
The Rangers had a chance to increase their lead but Oakland shortstop Miguel Tejada made a diving catch on a line drive by Teixeira, then threw to second to double off Rodriguez.
Texas starter Tony Mounce allowed four hits over five shutout innings before tiring in the sixth.
Mounce escaped from a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth when he struck out Jermaine Dye on a called third strike and got Eric Chavez on a fly ball.
Mounce took a shutout into the sixth, but was lifted after 105 pitches when he walked Hernandez to start the inning and threw one pitch to Adam Piatt. Mounce walked five and struck out four.
Rookie Rosman Garci pitched two perfect innings of relief, and was set to pick up first major league victory before the Rangers came back.
Notes: The hitters had trouble seeing the ball through the sun’s glare and the shadows across the infield in the early innings of a game that started an hour earlier than normal because it was being broadcast on national television. …Teixeira got his 11th start at third before moving over to first to start the ninth. He also has 29 starts at first base, six in left field, four in right field and five at DH. … This is Foulk’s third season with at least 20 saves.
