1927 – 2003

DAMARISCOTTA – Davis L. Burnell, 76, died June 22, at Miles Memorial Hospital.

Born in Portland, March 31, 1927, the son of Thornton L.C. and Lulu (Davis) Burnell, he was a 1946 graduate of Gould Academy.

“Dave” earned his bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College in 1950 and went on to earn his master’s degree in education at the University of Maine at Orono.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany during the Korean War. He taught English at Farmington High School, later Mt. Blue High School in Farmington. During his teaching career he coached several sports, including the girls’ ski team and high school football.

After he retired from teaching, he established a commercial sign business in Farmington and later built a sign shop in Temple. He and his wife, the Rev. Iris K. Burnell, settled in New Harbor a year ago.

Throughout most of his life, he was an avid golfer, having achieved two holes in one. He also skied, played tennis and was a talented watercolor artist. He was tremendously proud of his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Iris of New Harbor; five children, Janet and her husband, Bill Birtwell of Starks, Lynne and her husband, Tom Nygaard of Chaska, Minn., Tim and his wife, Brenda Burnell of Farmington, Charlie and his wife, Liz Burnell of Old Saybrook, Conn., and Nancy and her husband, Robert Taylor of Temple; two stepchildren, Charles and his wife, Faye Burleigh of Ransomville, N.Y., and Katherine Burleigh of Los Angeles, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.
