ATLANTA – Javy Lopez homered twice and Andruw Jones also went deep against former teammate Kevin Millwood as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 on Tuesday night.
Lopez, the leading vote-getter among NL catchers in balloting for the All-Star game, had his sixth two-homer game of an amazing comeback season.
In 2002, Lopez batted .233 with only 11 homers. He has 19 homers in his last 31 games, giving him 23 for the season – tied with Florida’s Mike Lowell and Toronto’s Carlos Delgado for the major league lead.
Millwood, traded from Atlanta to Philadelphia during the offseason, lost to his former team for the second time in less than a week.
Russ Ortiz (9-4) escaped early trouble to earn the win. The Phillies loaded the bases in each of the first three innings, but managed only two runs.
Expos 6, Pirates 4
MONTREAL – Brad Wilkerson became the fifth Montreal play1er to hit for the cycle, going 4-for-4 with four RBIs and leading the Expos to a 6-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.
Wilkerson bunted for a single in the second, hit a one-hop double off the right-field wall in the fifth, and put Montreal ahead 2-1 with a two-run triple in the sixth.
In the seventh, Wilkerson drove Salomon Torres’ 1-2 pitch over the center-field wall to become the first Expos player to hit for the cycle since Rondell White did it against San Francisco on June 11, 1995.
The two-run homer followed Jose Vidro’s RBI double, giving Wilkerson a career-high four RBIs for the fourth time.
Tomo Ohka (6-7) allowed four hits and one run in six innings as Montreal won for the fourth time in six games.
Marlins 8, Mets 4
NEW YORK – Luis Castillo triggered a four-run sixth inning with a two-run homer and Mike Lowell drove in two more runs to help the Florida Marlins to an 8-4 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night.
Castillo’s homer, his fifth of the season, gave the Marlins a 6-1 lead en route to their fifth straight victory.
Brad Penny (6-5) allowed four runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out six before leaving two batters into the seventh inning. He had been 0-7 in 10 appearances against the Mets, and 0-5 at Shea Stadium before Tuesday night.
Lowell, who started the night tied for third in the NL in RBIs, raised his total to 63 by driving in a run with a double in the third and another with a single in the fifth off Mets starter Al Leiter (8-4).
Florida took a 3-1 lead in the third when rookie shortstop Jose Reyes booted Ivan Rodriguez’s hard one-hopper with the bases loaded, allowing two runs to score. Lowell followed with his RBI double.
Royals 3, Indians 1
CLEVELAND – Chris George pitched out of trouble for most of his 5 2-3 innings Tuesday night and the Kansas City Royals won another game in the AL Central, 3-1 over the Cleveland Indians.
George (9-4), who is among the league leaders in wins despite a 6.18 ERA, allowed one run and seven hits to win his fourth straight start. The left-hander walked three, struck out three and was on the ropes from his first pitch.
However, he was able to get the big out when he needed one and the Indians helped by going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position against George.
White Sox 2, Twins 1
MINNEAPOLIS – Esteban Loaiza pitched eight impressive innings to move into a tie for the major league lead in wins, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 2-1 Tuesday night.
Loaiza (11-2) allowed only an unearned run and six hits, striking out six and walking one. He joined Toronto’s Roy Halladay and Colorado’s Shawn Chacon as the only pitchers in the majors with 11 wins.
Damaso Marte got two outs in the ninth, and Billy Koch retired Torii Hunter for his 11th save in 13 chances.
Only one Minnesota baserunner advanced past first in the first seven innings against Loaiza.
Rangers 7, Athletics 6
ARLINGTON, Texas – Carl Everett hit a three-run homer, Mark Teixeira had three RBIs and Mario Ramos earned his first major league victory as the Texas Rangers halted an eight-game losing streak by holding off the Oakland Athletics 7-6 Tuesday night.
The A’s rallied for four runs in the ninth on Terrence Long’s RBI single and Mark Ellis’ run-scoring triple off Brian Shouse, then Eric Byrnes’ two-run homer off closer Ugueth Urbina.
After Scott Hatteberg doubled, Urbina struck out Miguel Tejada for his 19th save in 23 chances. Urbina blew a save in Monday night’s 3-1 loss to the A’s.
Teixeira drove in two runs with his third-inning triple and added an RBI single in the fifth to push the Rangers to their third victory in 23 games.
Cubs 9, Brewers 1
CHICAGO – Sammy Sosa hit two of the Cubs’ six home runs for his first multihomer game of the season and 59th of his career as Chicago defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 9-1 Tuesday night.
Kerry Wood, Mark Grudzielanek and Alex Gonzalez hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning. Corey Patterson also homered for the Cubs.
The Cubs hit back-to-back homers off Brewers starter Ruben Quevedo in the first inning, when they brought nine batters to the plate. Patterson hit a two-run homer to left field and Sosa followed with a 420-foot shot to center.
Orioles 6, Blue Jays 4
TORONTO – Jeff Conine and Tony Batista homered as the Baltimore Orioles ended an eight-game losing streak to the Toronto Blue Jays with a 6-4 victory Tuesday night.
Carlos Delgado hit his AL-leading 23rd homer in the ninth inning for the Blue Jays. He leads the majors with 81 RBIs – the most ever by a Toronto player before the All-Star break
Conine hit a two-run homer off Kelvim Escobar (5-4) in the fourth to cut Baltimore’s deficit to 3-2.
Escobar hit Conine on the left shoulder with a pitch in the sixth. Conine glared at Escobar as he walked to first base, and plate umpire Ed Rapuano warned both dugouts.
Jay Gibbons followed with a two-run double past first baseman Carlos Delgado, giving Baltimore a 4-3 lead. Batista then chased Escobar with a two-run homer.
Yankees 10, Devil Rays 9
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Juan Rivera hit a three-run homer and Todd Zeile added an RBI double as the New York Yankees scored four times in the ninth inning to beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 10-9 Tuesday night.
Jason Anderson (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth for his first major league victory. Mariano Rivera worked the ninth for his 10th save in 11 opportunities as the Yankees won for just the second time in 28 tries when trailing after eight innings.
Tampa Bay wasted Marlon Anderson’s first career grand slam, which put them ahead 8-6 in the seventh inning. The Devil Rays added another run in the seventh on third baseman Robin Ventura’s fielding error, but closer Lance Carter (4-3) couldn’t hold the three-run lead.
