LEWISTON – The roadside memorials began appearing the day after the fatal crash. Crosses, baskets of flowers and a few hand-written notes.
Nearly two weeks after 30-year-old Kelly Boulay was killed in a crash on Route 4, the scene is still bright with tributes to the young mother.
The anguish and memories of Boulay’s friends and family are very clear. What remains unknown is what caused the June 12 crash that claimed the life of the Lewiston woman.
Boulay was driving south on Route 4 in the early evening when her sport utility vehicle apparently drifted into the oncoming lane, police said. There it collided with a cement mixer truck traveling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the mixer truck was not hurt, even after the rig flipped onto its side. Boulay, however, suffered multiple injuries in the wreck. She was flown to Central Maine Medical Center where she later died.
Maine State Police have been investigating the crash since the night it happened. They’ve reconstructed the crash scene and returned a couple of times for additional measurements. Results of the reconstruction and of an autopsy are pending.
Friends and family members said Boulay had suffered diabetes since she was 12 years old. Police are investigating to determine if complications of the disease may have contributed to the crash.
The daughter of a recently retired Auburn police lieutenant, Boulay had worked as a sales representative for Verizon in Portland for a decade. She was the mother of a 9-year-old boy, Ryan, who was not with her at the time of the crash.
By Tuesday, nearly two dozen individual memorials were lined up in the grass next to the northbound lane along Route 4. Among them was a piece of paper with a note to Boulay and to the rest of those still grieving her loss.
“We are all going to miss you,” the note says. “God bless you and Ryan and family.”
