We are all too aware of the high cost of health care and the supposed scrutiny all contributors to the problem are exercising.

Recently my wife turned 65 and had not received her new insurance card changing her coverage under my health plan to a supplemental program. After calling and receiving the necessary forms, they were filled out and returned.

On June 20, we received four letters from our insurance company containing four plastic health cards. One card had the old information showing coverage had been terminated; two cards had the correct new information (I don’t understand why my wife needs two); the fourth card had my name and some information I have had for over a year. The postage was over a dollar, plus the cost of envelopes, the papers explaining this mailing, the labor and additional overhead. All we needed was just one card.

To some this might sound petty, but I’m sure this is not an isolated situation and this sort of waste is ongoing.

Perhaps insurance companies should continue to look within their own structures for cost savings. They might be surprised as to what could be found.
