LEWISTON – Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin recently marked 29 years of service at its annual meeting, “A Celebration of Literacy.” Fifty-six members of LV, including students, tutors, volunteers, friends and family gathered together to share a potluck dinner, enjoy the talented performance of pianist Phil House, and celebrate the remarkable achievements of Literacy Volunteers members.

Awards were given in three categories: Exemplary Student, Exemplary Tutor and Exemplary Volunteer and a variety of gifts donated by the Sun Journal, the Portland Museum of Art, the Portland Sea Dogs, and the Gleason Radio Group, were available for each award recipient to choose from.

Award recipients were chosen for exhibiting an extraordinary commitment to literacy, overcoming obstacles, meeting goals, using creative approaches to learning, and participating as a full partner in the student/tutor team.

Honored students were: Randy Burgess, Mercedes Cedre, Terry Cedre, Mina Chadwick, Kenneth Cyr, Rose Decker, Christina Dumais, Mary Gilkes, Laura Harris, Albert Harvey, Priscilla Haskell, John Hazelton, Sherry Hoiland, Sandra Thompson Landry, John Perry, Kathy Plourde, Africa Rovdyo-Whittier and Theresa Winslow.

Tutors recognized were: Mary Atchison, Beth Ayotte, Kim Bosse, Betty Brown, Carol Brocker, Betty Campbell, Deborah Campbell, Linda Connelly, Marty Corey, Thelma Cunningham, Nancy Daniels, Ray Driscoll, Linda Duarte, Lu Farrington, Linda Fyler, Marguerite Goulet, Susan Jewett, Lucy Kosko, Gayle Knee, Walter Law, Susan Levine, Francis Lodge, Lise Lothrope, Phil Marquis, Amy McGuinness, Judy McMorrow, Angela Murphy, Elizabeth Perrin, Kathy Pitman, Patty Powers, Suzie Stover, Ellen Van Vlack, Judy Webber and Malca Wilner.

Exemplary volunteers: Steve Bouchard, Dawn, Trena Dubois, Natalie Dunlap, Bill Frayer, Robert Gardner, Tricia Griffin, Sandy Lane, Ruth Weymouth.

Unable to attend, but also recognized was Pauline Fortin, who has been a tutor and a tutor trainer for 25 years.
