1924 – 2003

PORTLAND – Joseph A. Tobin, 79, of River Avenue, Gardiner, died Sunday, June 29, at the Maine Medical Center.

Born in North Whitefield, April 19, 1924, he was a son of Charles and Elizabeth Luke Tobin.

He had been employed at Raymond International retiring in 1987 and for Fletcher-Gramer retiring a second time in 1990.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Cavanaugh Council in North Whitefield. “Joe” was a man who put others needs ahead of his own. He was a good neighbor, friend and father. When he was 16 years old he killed a bull with one stone.

Survivors include his wife, Edna McCurdy Hanson Tobin of Gardiner; his son, Charles Tobin of Forty Fort, Pa.; three daughters, Ann Bishop and her husband, Brent of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Mary Jo Higgins of Augusta and Terri Reynolds and her husband, Peter of South Gardiner; three sisters, Mary Olsen of Augusta, Margaret Chase of North Whitefield and Denise Stultz of Augusta; four stepchildren, James Hanson of West Pt. Island, Bruce Hanson of South Paris, Arthur Hanson of Hubert Heights, Ohio, and Elaine Gilbert of Herman; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary (Morin) Tobin; his sister, Violet McCormick; a brother, Charles Tobin; and a niece, Karen Olsen Wheeler.
