BETHEL – Locke Mills swept a double header from New Auburn Post 153 on Saturday, 8-5 and 3-2, in Zone 3 American Legion baseball.
Quinn McAllister drove in a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sharp single to right to give Locke Mills (7-5) the lead for good in Game 1.
New Auburn (5-7) took the early lead, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning, only to have Locke Mills answer with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Kyle Kipikas carried the big bat for Locke Mills with a double and single.
Corey Wing notched the win with relief help from McAllister in the sixth inning. Greg Hird took the loss for New Auburn.
Locke Mills also roared back to take the second game in eight innings. After the hosts loaded the bases, Karl Olson singled to left field, scoring Peter Poor.
Terry Collins gained the pitching win. New Auburn, which now has lost seven straight games, was paced by Nick Lawler and Derek Miller. Each belted a double.
Mid-Coast, Cole Farms split
GRAY – Cole Farms scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 6-5 victory and a split of its Zone 3 doubleheader with division-leading Mid-Coast of Bath.
Mid Coast used all unearned runs to capture the opener, 4-2.
Shane Corcoran stole home for the winning run in the nightcap for Cole Farms (4-7). Andy Crawford notched the pitching win.
In the first game, Mid Coast (8-2) collected a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning, then added one in the third on a single, a fielder’s choice, and an error on the second baseman.
Cole Farms countered with two runs in the fifth. Andy Cantrell gained the win with relief help from Mark Rodgers in the sixth. Louis Bernardini took the loss despite striking out eight.
Monmouth sweeps Franklin County
WALES – Monmouth stayed near the top the Zone 2 Southern Division race with 8-0 and 12-3 wins over Franklin County.
Seven pitchers combined on a two-hitter in the opener for Monmouth (12-3). Mark Wade and Josh Stroup shared the hitting honors, each slapping a pair of hits.
Brian Gardner went the distance on the mound in the second game, also allowing only two hits. Wade ripped a double, while Ben Muniz clubbed a triple. Matt Gilbert took the loss for Franklin (3-10).
Bessey takes two
SOUTH PARIS – Garrett Olson belted five hits and Andrew Stacy picked up two pitching victories as Bessey Motors swept Andy Valley, 6-5 and 7-3, in a Zone doubleheader.
Jeff Austin also enjoyed two multiple-hit games for Bessey (8-4), which strengthened its grip on second place in the division.
Stacy pitched two innings of relief to win the opener. Andy Valley (5-7) scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but Bessey (8-4) tied it with a run in the bottom of the inning. Olson tripled in the ninth and scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Joe Baker.
Chad Schrepper and Dustin Gilbert each stroked three hits in the opener for Andy Valley. Olson also belted a double for Bessey.
Stacy pitched six innings of the nightcap before his brother, Mike, mopped up. Olson had another triple among his three hits. Austin and Andy Valley’s Jordan Morris each chalked up a pair. Andrew Stacy added a double.
Gayton 5, Poland 3
POLAND – Gayton Post tallied a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to down Poland 5-3 in the first game of a scheduled Zone 3 doubleheader. The second game was called due a thunderstorm and will be played at 5:45 p.m. Monday.
Tyler Turgeon led off the eighth with a crisp single. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and raced home with the game winning run on Brian Blais’ single.
Mike LeClair picked up the win in relief of Dustin Longchamps. Nate Olson took the loss.
