1930 – 2003

PORTLAND- Fred Fillinger Jr., 73, of Northern Oaks Drive, Little Sebago Lake, and formerly of Portland, died unexpectedly, July 5, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Portland on April 7, 1930, the son of Fred and Mabel Johnson Fillinger Sr. and attended school in Portland. He was a champion swimmer who in 1945, at the age of 15, was named to the All-American Swim Team, coached by Harold Paulsen.

He owned and operated Fillinger and Bowley Plastering Inc. of Portland, a commercial and residential plastering company, from 1960 until his retirement in 1993.

On Sept. 16, 1946, he married the love of his life, Jacqueline L. McLeod. As a couple they shared 45 years together, until her death on Oct. 10, 1991.

A hard-working man all of his life, his greatest accomplishments were his children and grandchildren. He loved his home on Little Sebago Lake, where he lived since 1977 and enjoyed time spent there with family and friends.

Surviving are one son, Fred Fillinger III and his wife Cynthia of Windham; four daughters, Anona Spaulding and her husband Michael of Raymond, Lorraine Gadway and her husband Richard Sr. of Sabattus, Laura Fillinger of Portland, and Jackie Lynn Fillinger of Steep Falls; one sister, Janice Prescott, of Portland; four grandchildren, Janelle Goff and her husband Richard “TJ” of Windham, and Fred Fillinger IV and his wife Elizabeth, also of Windham, and Lauren Odiorne and Shannon Odiorne, both of Lewiston; two great-grandchildren, Arlene Goff and Fred Bailey Fillinger V, both of Windham,;a sister-in-law, June Moore, of Westbrook; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was also predeceased by one brother, Raymond Fillinger; and four sisters, Alberta DeVoe, Charlotte Rickett, Katherine Huff and Eunice Galvin.
