RUMFORD – The Black Mountain Board of Directors is looking for a few sturdy chain saw and brush cutter operators to volunteer their time this weekend.

Anyone who wants to help clear the sight line for a chairlift that will eventually go to the summit should come to the foot of Black Mountain on Sunday anytime from 8 a.m. to noon.

Volunteers have already cleared about two-thirds of the site, but more needs to be done, said board member Jolene Lovejoy.

The group hopes to get the project done Sunday, July 13. Volunteers should bring their own chain saws or brush cutters.

The family-oriented mountain was recently purchased by the Maine Winter Sports Center that will be supplying funding for a number of improvements over the next few months. However, the nonprofit also depends heavily on community support and volunteerism.

The board is still looking for a reasonably priced chairlift that will carry skiers to the peak of the small mountain. Part of the improvement plans calls for extending the Alpine trail all the way to the top, a distance of nearly 1,200 feet. A novice chairlift for another site on the mountain has been found.
