BETHEL – More than 300 people attended the 11th annual Fourth of July Community Picnic on the grounds of Bethel Historical Society’s Dr. Moses Mason House.

The highlight of the afternoon was the two-hour concert by the Portland Brass Quintet. Prior to that, society president Arlan Jodrey announced the dedication of an American Liberty Elm planted in memory of Alan Abbott, a longtime member of the society’s Garden and Grounds Committee. The color guard of Mundt-Allen American Legion Post 81 also participated in the festivities.

The society also will be holding the 23rd annual Sudbury Canada Days, Aug. 8, 9 and 10. This is the summer heritage festival with all kinds of activities for the whole family. Anyone wishing to participate or volunteer should contact the office at (800) 824-2910 or (207) 824-2908.

More than a thousand members strong, the Bethel Historical Society, founded in 1966, is dedicated to collecting, preserving and interpreting the regional past for present and future generations. For more than 35 years, the society’s activities have included lectures, exhibits, special events, heritage festivals, workshops, conferences, school and educational programs, and publications. Since 1974, the society has operated from its Broad Street headquarters, the Dr. Moses Mason House, a period house museum and research library. In 1999, it opened the O’Neil Robinson House (next door) to the public for an expanded exhibit program, museum shop space, and administrative offices. Through the years, the Society’s achievements have been recognized by a number of state and national organizations.
