LIVERMORE FALLS – Selectmen didn’t ride the roads Monday night, as planned, due to a mix-up on bus arrangements, but they did discuss Road Foreman Denis Castonguay’s suggestions at length.
With only $25,000 to spend, the board weighed carefully the merits of doing work on Tradition Way, Moose Hill Road, Haines Corner Road, Campground Road, Hillcrest Road, Pine Avenue and Campground Road.
The disorganized discussion continued for so long that Castonguay finally asked the board, “What am I going to do for paving this year? I need to know and here it is July already.”
Finally, it was agreed to spend an estimated $15,500 to repair a section of Haines Corner Road where heavy trucks have damaged the road, to start preparation for work next year on Strickland Loop and to get more information on replacing a box culvert on Moose Hill Road by Gnome Brook.
The board will also review sidewalks to determine what needs to be done on them. One suggested as needing attention was Park Street.
Former Town Manager Maxine Bailey, head of the Gazebo Committee, explained to the board that the structure had been built with donations, that it isn’t actually owned by the town and that the committee (Maxine Bailey, Sybil Bailey, Dianne French and Ron Chadwick) oversees it.
She also said more members would be welcome on the committee and received one volunteer, Earl Howard, from the audience.
Sybil Bailey, the treasurer, sets up the concerts, and those wishing to use the gazebo may call either of the Baileys.
She recalled the recent flag incident, noting that she hadn’t felt the flags should be there because of the concerts. Due to the uprising from veterans when they were taken down, “We gave in,” Bailey said. “I hope next time they ask.”
When asked about having a portable toilet near the gazebo, Bailey said she thought Town Manager Alan Gove had taken care of it. She agreed it was a good idea and should only be needed about three months in the summer.
Bailey noted that a great deal of work has been done in the building but that some rivets need to be replaced in the roof. Selectman Bernal Lake volunteered to take care of that.
She also noted that the new ramp had been donated. Sybil Bailey added that there had been problems last year with skateboarders and in-line skaters.
Chairman Bill Demaray asked for an accounting of activities since the town supports the gazebo, a request which the committee said they would gladly honor.
