PERU – Selectmen Monday night discussed the Comprehensive Planning Committee’s questionnaire, which would be used to get residents input on forming a comprehensive plan.

The Board was hoping to hand it out at a public forum to be held on Wednesday night, but after considerable discussion, they decided to wait until autumn.

Bill Hines, chairman of the Comprehensive Planning Committee, said he will have three questions on Wednesday night.

“What do people like about Peru? What do people dislike about Peru? And what changes would they like to see?” Hines said.

Committee members and selectmen are hoping to see a large turnout of residents for the forum, to be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The committee says the voices and ideas of the town are needed to help create a vision that fairly addresses the needs of all for Peru’s present and future.

Monday’s discussion involved whether to use a random sampling survey of residents versus a blanket mailing of the questionnaire to the entire town. The Comprehensive Planning Committee compiled the questionnaire and Hines said selectmen should give the committee credit for the survey that he hopes will catch the pulse of the people.

Selectman Jim Pulsifer insisted the survey must be random in order to portray a true picture of the people’s desires.

Selectman Chairman Norman DeRoche said he felt the whole town should have a chance to have their say. Discussions seemed to favor a random type of survey.

In other news, building permits were signed for Jeff Wade and Dan Small.

Selectman Kathy Hussey said she has started a list of places that may be violating the junk yard ruling from Maine Municipal Authority. Pulsifer suggested a workshop for the selectmen to more clearly define what constitutes a “junk yard.”

Hussey also said she spoke with Rob Williams at the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife requesting an update on the proposed boat launch at the Worthley Pond. Buildings have been removed and gravel has been hauled in to fill holes, but there was no time frame on completing the project.

Selectmen approved letters going to the Small Community Grant Septic System Replacements recipients. Grants were approved for Mary Wilson, Dave Davis, Richard Vaughn and Carroll Merrill subject to availability of funds.
