Do your readers know that we have wonderful teams of AmeriCorps volunteers right here in Maine? Having hosted some 10 of these skilled and giving young people over the past three years, I am enthusiastic about their unselfish gift of themselves for the good of others – before they each go on into private careers.
Stephanie helped train high school kids at risk through challenging backwoods camping skills. Kyra taught teens environmental information and appreciation. Eric trained forest firefighters, including Julie who was called to lead a fire team in Stanislaus National Forest, Calif. Alex camped in the snow before starting a team of trail builders.
These young people come from around the country. And they are trained and train others right here in Maine.
AmeriCorps is our American Peace Corps. The White House needs to hear how strongly we Mainers appreciate the big bang we get for the few bucks it costs for the program.
I am extra proud to be an American among these skilled and giving young Americans.
