ORIENT (AP) – An Orient man was killed Wednesday when after his wife apparently fell asleep and drove their car off of Route 1, police said.

John Edward Quigley, 97, was a passenger in a car driven by Charlene Quigly, 84, when the car drifted off the road, hit an embankment and went airborne for 21 feet before coming to a rest, according to Aroostook County Sheriff’s Deputy Vance Palmer.

John Quigley died of head injuries, the deputy said. The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m., and both of the Quigleys were wearing seat belts.

Palmer said Mrs. Quigley suffered lacerations to the face and bruises and was being treated at Houlton Memorial Hospital.
