ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) – New York Rangers forward Roman Lyashenko wrote a suicide note, then apparently tried to cut his wrists before hanging himself, a Turkish police officer said Wednesday.

Lyashenko’s body was found hanging Sunday by a belt in the bathroom at a beach resort in Antalya, a southern Mediterranean province. He had been vacationing with his mother and sister.

In the note, Lyashenko apologized for killing himself, according to the paramilitary police officer who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The prosecutor’s office refused to comment Wednesday, saying the investigation was ongoing.

Lyashenko played regularly with the Dallas Stars his first two seasons in the NHL, then was traded to the New York Rangers in the 2001-02 season.

Last season, he played two games with New York, spending the year with Hartford for the American Hockey League, where he had 23 goals and 35 assists.

In 139 NHL games, Lyashenko had 14 goals and nine assists. The Russian was selected by Dallas in the second round of the 1997 NHL entry draft.

Lyashenko had two assists in nine games at the 2002 world hockey championships, in which Russia captured the silver medal.

He won a gold medal in 1999 and a silver medal the year before while playing for Russia in the world junior championships.
