BROWNFIELD – Police seized four weapons and arrested two people in a confrontation on Wednesday in which a man was held at gunpoint.
Gary E. Heberle, 61, of Florida was charged with reckless conduct with a firearm. His bail was set at $10,000 cash.
Also arrested was Philip F. Laverriere Jr., 41, of North Conway, N.H., who was charged with criminal trespass, theft and possession of a scheduled Class Z drug for having a prescription drug in a container other than a drug container. His bail was set at $200 cash.
According to Oxford County Sheriff Office Capt. James P. Miclon, the trouble began when Laverriere was trying to take a car from Heberle’s property at about 11 a.m.
Miclon said Heberle fired two shots in the air from a 9mm semi-automatic handgun to control Laverriere and then fired another shot in the air near a neighbor’s house to get her attention.
“He got her attention,” Miclon said. “As well as ours.”
The neighbor called the sheriff’s office when she noticed Heberle had a gun.
Miclon said Heberle owns a house on Fire Lane 18, just off the Old County Road and that last week the Immigration and Naturalization Services picked up some people staying there. The people taken by INS left two vehicles on the property.
“Laverriere apparently learned of the vehicles there and Heberle didn’t know him,” Miclon said. “Laverriere showed up on a motorcycle and tried to take an older model Ford Bronco. Heberle asked him what he was doing and when he saw Laverriere leaning on a hunting knife, which he had on his side, he pulled out 9 mm and fired off two rounds in the air.
“Heberle said he tried to call police on a cell phone, but there’s no service there,” Miclon said. “So, he escorted Laverriere back toward the person who called us to use her phone and fired off a shot to get her attention.”
OCSO Cpl. Dane Tripp arrived at the home first. Miclon said Tripp grabbed a shotgun when he saw that one man had a handgun.
“He asked both men to show him their hands,” Miclon said. “Then he had them lay down and he retrieved the gun.”
Miclon said the pair complied with Tripp’s orders.
He added that officials seized four firearms from Heberle’s home: two .22-caliber rifles, a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun and a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol.
Assisting Tripp in the arrests were OCSO Sgt. Gary Hill and Cpl. Tim Ontengco.
