MEXICO – Selectmen approved a modified parking lot and trail plan for the rear of the town office, set up several special meetings and authorized borrowing funds if needed in anticipation of property tax payments.

Town Manager Joseph Derouche said several of the parking spaces originally designated near the exit will be eliminated, one of the handicapped parking spaces at the rear of the town office will be moved closer to the building and the gazebo is going ahead as planned.

A petition was presented to the board last month asking for changes to the parking space configuration because some believed insufficient space existed for safe vehicle traffic.

A total of 66 spaces will be available at the rear of the town office complex and library.

The gazebo, to be constructed by volunteers beginning next week, is meant to provide an area for community events. Trees will be planted near the river and the trail at the rear of the parking lot.

In other business, the board approved borrowing up $245,000 in tax anticipation funds if money is needed to continue the town’s cash flow. Property taxes are due on Oct. 1.

Michael Mann and Jim Belyea were appointed to the Board of Appeals.

The board now has three members.

Two more are needed. Derouche said the new members will attend a Maine Municipal Association workshop that describes the duties of a Board of Appeals in the near future.

In addition to the next regular selectmen’s meeting on Aug. 13, the board also set: 2 p.m. Aug. 6 to discuss personnel polices; 1 p.m. Aug. 27 for a workshop on municipal financial matters; 6:30 p.m. Sept. 16 to conduct the annual town manager review; and 5:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Mexico Recreation Center for the annual employees Night of Appreciation.
