Volunteers sought for two boards

The town is looking for a few good men and women to serve on town boards. Selectmen discussed vacancies and a need for volunteers Tuesday night.

With the recent resignation of longtime Planning Board member Robert Cromwell, the board elevated alternate member Charles Finger to a full voting member. A new alternate member is needed. Alternate members are expected to attend all meetings and vote when fewer than three regular members are present. Alternates are frequently promoted to full status when positions become available.

The town is also seeking a volunteer to serve on the Recreation Committee.

Anyone interested in serving a three-year term on one of these boards should visit the town office or call 998-4601.

Police vehicles about to arrive

Police Chief David Brooks expects to have three new police cars and a new mid-size SUV delivered by the middle of next week.

Augusta Ford, the only firm to submit bids for the cars, will provide three 2003 Ford Crown Victoria police cars at a cost of $62,109, minus $9,200 for trade allowance, for a net cost of $52,909. Requests for bids were sent to four other dealers who did not respond, Police Chief David Brooks said.

Augusta Ford’s low bid of $20,200 with trade for a 2003 Ford Explorer also was accepted. Other bidders for the SUV were Emerson Chevrolet of Auburn, 2003 Trailblazer, $26,550; Pape Chevrolet of South Portland, 2003 Trailblazer, $26,972; and O’Connor GMC of Augusta, $22,840 for a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer program vehicle. The new SUV will be a marked vehicle and kept at the the Police Department, Brooks said.

All four vehicles will be on a three-year, lease-purchase agreement. The purchases, which were approved at the May town meeting, will be paid for at the rate of $25,000 per year.

Two businesses seek designation

Two local businesses, Rite Aid of Lisbon Falls and Rooper’s of Lisbon Village, have applied to the state Liquor Commission to become agency liquor stores.

The openings are available as the state continues its plan to get out of the liquor business, Town Manager Curtis Lunt said. Selectmen, at their meeting this week, favored the agency be given to Rooper’s since there is already one in Lisbon Falls.
