DETROIT (AP) – Boston Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez will not play in the All-Star game next week due to a sore left hamstring.
Ramirez, who was the designated hitter Saturday night against the Detroit Tigers,
has been playing despite the
injury, which he said came while legging out a triple against Toronto on Wednesday.
“I’m disappointed about not going to the All-Star Game,” Ramirez said after Boston’s 4-2, 11-inning win over Detroit. “But I have to take care of this injury and be ready for the second half of the season. (The hamstring) has been getting tighter, and I’ve been trying not to push it. I think the three days off will help.”
Ramirez, who went 1-for-5 against the Tigers, was voted in by fans as an American League starter for the fifth year in a row. He has been named to the All-Star team seven times in all, including six starts.
Chicago White Sox right fielder Magglio Ordonez was named as Ramirez’s replacement.
Ordonez is batting .294 with 16 homers and 50 RBIs. This will be his fourth All-Star game.
