AUBURN – Five Edward Little High School students have completed a week at Dirigo Girls State at Husson College in Bangor. The program emphasizes participation in state government and elections through lectures, presentations and simulations. The program is for young women completing their junior year in high school.
The representatives were Jennifer Lever, Rebecca Hughes, Sarah Gardner, Kathy Harder and Megan Skilling.
Lever is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lever. She has been the class president for three years and a member of the softball and field hockey teams. Last fall she was a member of the Western Class A champions in field hockey This spring she organized the prom. At Girls State she held an appointed town office and also ran successfully for the senate where she chaired a committee.
Hughes is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hughes. She has been a member of the executive board of her class, a field hockey player and a lacrosse player. Last fall she was a member of the Class A Western Maine champions in field hockey. At Girls State she held a town office and ran successfully for the House where she was a chairwoman of the committee on the implementation of a state casino.
Gardner is the daughter of Elizabeth Gondek and Carlton Gardner. She has been a member of the executive committee, the cross country Nordic ski team and the outdoor track team. Last fall she was a member of the SMAA champion team in cross country. At Girls State she was elected a selectwoman in her town and later in the week ran successfully for the House.
Harder is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Harder. She has been on her class executive committee for three years and a field hockey player for three years. She was also a member of last fall’s Western Class A champion team in field hockey. She plays lacrosse in the spring. At Girls State she participated in her town and party activities. Her name was placed in nomination for the governor’s council at the party caucus.
Skilling is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barry Skilling. Throughout high school she has been a member of the band and the choral groups. She was part of the band that placed in the national competition at Williamsburg, Va., earlier this spring. She has also been a member of the school civil rights team. At Girls State she was a member of the finance committee in her town. the planning committee for her party and the Girls State Band.
All five were selected by the faculty council last spring to become members of the National Honor Society at the induction ceremony.
