OXFORD – To ease long traffic backups of previous years, the Oxford Police Department has created an elaborate detour plan around the Oxford Plains Speedway on Route 26 during this Sunday’s 22nd annual Show, Shine & Drag event.

The plan will allow drivers who are not attending the popular VIP Discount Tire & Auto car show and drag racing event to bypass both Route 26 approaches to the speedway using back roads.

Northbound Route 26 traffic will be rerouted to a right-hand turn on Station Road, across from Maine-Ly Action Sports, to East Oxford Road. From there, drivers can hook up with Route 26 again either by turning left on Oxford Street or to the end of East Oxford Road near Market Square.

Those coming from the Lewiston-Auburn area via Route 121 will turn right on Schoolhouse Road just before the intersection with Route 26. From there, those headed to the speedway will turn again to enter the racetrack parking area from the Number Six Road.

Drivers headed south on Route 26 will be rerouted around the speedway by turning right on Skeetfield Road, then left on King Street. From King Street, they’ll hook back up with southbound traffic on the highway at the Station Road intersection.

If the Skeetfield Road-King Street route gets backed up, a much longer backup bypass route will be created for southbound traffic using Pottle Road, Coldwater Brook Road, Allen Hill Road, then along Pleasant and King Streets.

The gates open for Show, Shine and Drag at 7:30 a.m., and the event typically draws car enthusiasts by the thousands. The day ends with a show awards ceremony from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. VIP is charging a $2 admission fee for the event, and all of the proceeds will be donated to the town of Oxford.
