Companies to demonstrate heavy equipment

OXFORD – On July 26, a demonstration of raw power will take place at the Oxford County Fairgrounds.

But it won’t be work animals in pulling contests. People will instead be watching demonstrations of heavy construction equipment – bulldozers, graders, cranes and excavators – in a first-of-its-kind Dozer Dayz event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A board member of the new Boxberry School in Oxford came up with the idea of showing heavy construction equipment in action as a way to raise money, having seen a similar event draw big crowds in Wisconsin.

The Boxberry School board teamed up with the local chapter of Big Brothers, Big Sisters and the Child Health Center in Norway to organize the event, said board member Jessicca Grover. The three organizations will share in the proceeds from admissions, which are $4 per person, or $10 a family.

Grover said the Associated Constructors of Maine, an organization of contracting companies, has been enthusiastic in its support for the program. Nine private contractors and the Maine Turnpike Authority are bringing equipment to both demonstrate and have on display, for an up-close-and-personal inspection. There will be an operator for each machine, which also includes 18-wheelers, front-end loaders, dump trucks, plow trucks and paving equipment.

“They are very much behind it,” Grover said of ACOM. Women Unlimited, an organization supporting women in male-dominated occupations, will also sponsor a block-building competition for children three times during the day.

Heavy equipment demonstrations will take place hourly from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of the stadium. There’ll be food for sale, and hats and T-shirts will be sold.

“We’re hoping for quite a crowd,” said Grover, who said organizers have been busy posting signs, flyers and banners from Augusta down to York.

Construction companies participating in Dozer Days include Bancroft Contracting, McGee Construction, Chadwick-BaRoss, R.J. Grondin & Sons, P & K Sand & Gravel, Gorham Sand & Gravel, Southworth-Milton, Shaw Brothers Construction and Pike Industries.
