PORTLAND (AP) – A small painting of boxer Jack Johnson valued at $2,500 has been stolen from a local art gallery.
A thief made off with the oil-on-acrylic painting on Friday afternoon, said Andres Verzosa, who owns Aucocisco Galleries at the Eastland Park Hotel.
A gallery attendant notified police soon after he noticed the painting missing from a wall near the gallery door. The painting by Jessica Gandolf, a Portland artist, measures seven by five inches.
Four people visited the gallery between its noon opening and the time the theft was reported, according to a police report. Verzosa said a security tape revealed nothing unusual.
Police couldn’t be reached Monday to discuss the incident.
Gandolf is best known for her portraits of sports heroes. The portrait of Johnson, completed in 1996, shows a young boxer with his arms crossed over his muscular chest, eyes penetrating in their focus.
Johnson was the first African-American heavyweight champion, winning the title in 1908 and defending it through 1915.
