“Town officials in Clinton are considering an agreement to lease brand new police cars for just $1. That sounds like a great deal. The catch is that the company providing the cars gets to sell advertising that would appear on the vehicles.” (July 14)

I don’t understand why this is a “catch.”

While we all can see the humor in a “Dunkin Donuts” advertisement on a police car, the fact of the matter is that there are companies out there willing to show their support for the community. I, for one, would be more willing to do business with companies that are civic minded and willing to put time, money and effort back into the towns they do business in.

If the ads are tasteful, (“To Protect and Serve French Fries” doesn’t quite float.), this is a win-win situation for everyone involved. The local police get the new vehicles that they need to perform their services, and the local businesses can show their support for their communities. I see no harm in that.
