NEW YORK – Derek Jeter scored from first on Jason Giambi’s three-run single, and the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 7-4 Saturday for their fourth straight victory.
Alfonso Soriano hit a leadoff homer and Raul Mondesi also connected for the Yankees, who got seven innings from David Wells on Old-Timers’ Day. Mariano Rivera bailed out a shaky Armando Benitez to close it.
Orioles 8, Angels 4
BALTIMORE – The Baltimore Orioles made it easy for Sidney Ponson to earn his career-high 13th win, scoring seven runs in the first two innings Saturday night in an 8-4 victory over the Anaheim Angels.
Luis Matos homered and drove in three runs, and Jeff Conine and B.J. Surhoff each had two RBIs for the Orioles, who on Sunday will seek to complete their first four-game sweep of the Angels since 1965.
Ponson (13-5) allowed four runs – three earned – and nine hits in 6 1-3 innings for his 12th win in 15 starts.
White Sox 6, Tigers 2
CHICAGO – Nate Cornejo had a no-hitter for 6 2-3 innings. Then, in a matter of minutes Saturday night, he had the loss as the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Detroit Tigers 6-2.
Pinch-hitter Tony Graffanino lofted a three-run homer in the seventh off reliever Jamie Walker, ruining a strong effort by the 23-year-old Cornejo and sending the White Sox to victory.
Rangers 7, Devil Rays 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Doug Glanville hit a two-run double in Texas’ four-run second inning as the Rangers beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 7-3 on Saturday night.
Glanville went 3-for-5, and has 16 hits in 30 at-bats in his last seven games for the Rangers. Joaquin Benoit (5-4) gave up three runs and six hits in five innings for the win.
Twins 9, Athletics 4
MINNEAPOLIS – Doug Mientkiewicz hit a two-run homer and Matthew LeCroy added a three-run double in the Minnesota Twins’ 9-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.
Brad Radke got his first win in 10 starts since May 16 and Dustan Mohr hit a two-run double for Minnesota, which improved to 7-1 against Oakland this season and won its third consecutive game.
Royals 5, Mariners 1
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Darrell May pitched eight sharp innings to win his fifth straight start and Aaron Guiel hit a two-run double as the Kansas City Royals topped the Seattle Mariners 5-1 Saturday night.
May (5-4) allowed three hits, none after Dan Wilson’s second inning double. He has a 1.50 ERA in his past five starts.
. In that span, May has allowed 25 hits and six earned runs in 36 innings.
Kansas City’s outfielders made several superb plays to back May.
Carlos Beltran reached over the center-field fence to rob Dan Wilson of a home run in the seventh and Guiel had seven putouts, including a diving catch of Ichiro Suzuki’s line drive to right to lead off the eighth.
The Royals scored three runs in the eighth. Michael Tucker and Angel Berroa opened with singles and Gil Meche’s throwing error on Brent Mayne’s sacrifice allowed Tucker to score, while Berroa moved to third and Mayne went to second.
Guiel, who has driven in eight runs in his past nine game, doubled to right to score Berroa and Mayne.
Randy Winn homered, his third of the season, to left in the second on a 1-2 pitch for the only Mariners’ run.
Mariners right-hander Meche (10-6) retired the first nine batters he faced before Guiel singled to leadoff the fourth. Meche is 0-3 in four July starts.
The Royals tied it in the fifth, which Tucker led off with a walk and scored on Mayne’s double into the right-field corner. Mayne extended his hitting streak to a season-high seven games.
The Royals went ahead in the sixth. Desi Relaford, who missed the previous three games with a sore left wrist, doubled to open the inning and advanced to third on Beltran’s bunt single. Relaford scored when Raul Ibanez bounced into a double play.
Ibanez, who went 2-for-4, is hitting .433 (13-for-30) this season against the Mariners, his former club.
Notes: OF Dee Brown, who had been on the disabled list since May 28 with a sprained left wrist, was activated. The Royals optioned IF Jarrod Patterson to Triple-A Omaha. … Mariners closer Kazuhiro Sasaki, who is on the DL with broken ribs on his right side, threw 35 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday. …The Royals improved to 33-0 when holding their opponent to three or less runs.
