Paul G. Kailey was influential in the founding of Sunday River Skiway.
BETHEL – Gould Academy renamed its competition center at Sunday River “The Paul G. Kailey Competition Center” in honor of former teacher and coach the late Paul G. Kailey in a ceremony July 12 attended by Kailey’s family, friends and colleagues from the ski industry.
The Kailey Competition Center, located at the base of Barker Mountain at the Sunday River Ski Resort is the home base of the Gould Academy/Sunday River Competition Programs. It includes facilities for athlete gatherings, video analysis, dryland conditioning, and coaches’ offices.
Kailey, who began his teaching and coaching career at Gould in 1950, died this spring. At the gathering, Kailey was remembered as a respected teacher of European history, and an outstanding coach who helped develop Gould’s renowned competitive skiing program.
Kailey’s skiing colleague, Brett Russell, said of Kailey, “He was a tough, but compassionate coach. His skiers were well-trained and disciplined, but not cocky.”
Kailey’s son, Peter ’69, also spoke, saying, “Dad never thought of himself as special, he thought of himself as lucky. He would be shocked and very honored to have seen this gathering here today.”
