BIDDEFORD – Auburn Surburban advanced to the championship game of the State Senior Little League Tournament as the lone undefeated team.

In game one of the tournament starting Saturday, July 19, Auburn Surburban defeated South Portland National 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The winning run scored with Robie Leighton leading off with a single. Brian Erickson followed with a sacrifice bunt with Leighton advancing all the way to third. He then scored the winning run on a throwing error.

Chris Merrill picked up the win going all seven innings, giving up eight hits, walking two, and striking out four. He was matched by Morgan Fineberg going all the way for the South Portland squad. Leading hitters for the South Portland effort were Andy Esty and Steve Bartlerr each with a single and a double. Joe Tweedie contributed a single and two RBIs. Leighton scored twice for Auburn.

Auburn Surburban came away with a hard fought 4-2 victory over Coastal/Blue Hill/Deer Isle in their second match on Sunday. Both teams scored two runs in the fifth inning with Auburn scoring two more in the top of the seventh. The team was helped by a game-ending double play.

David Lutz went 3-for-3 with two runs scored for the victors. Justin Ciszewski contributed a double and two RBIs along with Brandon Elie’s two singles and two RBIs. For Coastal, Blake Wessel continued his hot hitting going 2-for-4. Adam Cousins went the distance for Coastal giving up nine hits, one walk, hitting one batter, and striking out eight. For Auburn, the trio of Derek Doucette, Ciszewski, and Elie combined to scatter four hits, while giving up one walk. hitting three, and striking out eight. Ciszewski picked up the win while Elie gained the save.

The championship game will be played this evening at 5:30 p.m. The winner will represent the State of Maine in the Regional Tournament to be held in West Deptford, N.J. starting August 2.

SOUTH PORTLAND – Windham beat Lewiston in a doubleheader Monday afternoon. In game one, Windham defeated Lewiston 11-1 in five innings. Nick Durice was the winning pitcher and hit two singles. Sam Napp doubled and singled, while Cam Spring hit two singles for the Windham win. Lewiston was led by Tal Hubbard, Erik Waite, and Erick Bonawitz each with a single.

Windham won the second game 8-1. Mitch Woodberry recording the win on the mound. Spring hit an inside-the-park homer to lead Windham (2-0). Waite hit two singles for the Lewiston effort.

Charles B. Snow Tourney

SACO – The Auburn Suburban B Team, 11-12, Little League All-Stars finished in a tie for third in the Charles B. Snow Tournament held in Saco.

The team won four games before being eliminated in the semifinals by the Scarborough 12 team on Saturday. The Auburn team was down 8-0 and rallied to take a 11-9 lead going into the sixth inning behind the hitting coach of Cote Goddard, EJ Zembas, and Nate Shea. Scarborough scored three runs in the sixth to win it.

Auburn earned the right to play in the semifinals by beating Portland Deering on Friday by a score of 10-0. Goddard pitched the shutout, and Matt Gordon, Jake Naum, and Jess Barlow delivered key hits.
