NEW YORK – Mark Hendrickson returned from the minors to shut down the New York Yankees and Vernon Wells homered twice to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a rain-shortened 8-0 victory Monday night.

Wells drove in three runs, and Eric Hinske and Chris Woodward each had two RBIs for the Blue Jays, who tagged Jeff Weaver for 11 hits and ended the Yankees’ five-game winning streak.

The Blue Jays have won five straight in New York – they swept a four-game series at Yankee Stadium for the first time in franchise history May 22-25.

The 6-foot-9 Hendrickson, a former NBA player, was sent to the minors July 9 and made two solid starts before being recalled Monday. He won for the first time in five big league starts since June 12 against Pittsburgh.

The game was called following the mandatory 30-minute wait in the middle of the eighth inning. That gave Hendrickson (6-6) his first career complete game even though reliever Scott Service was warming up on the mound to pitch the bottom of the eighth before the rain came.

Hendrickson gave up just five hits and two walks in seven innings, redeeming himself after an awful outing against the Yankees in his first start of the season.

On April 2 in Toronto, the soft-tossing lefty was roughed up for seven runs and 10 hits in just 1 2-3 inning – the shortes start of his career.

Devil Rays 3, Angels 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Rob Bell allowed one run and six hits in 7 1-3 innings as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat Anaheim 3-2 Monday night, extending the Angels’ losing streak to a season-high five.

Anaheim, which had won five straight heading into the All-Star break, is on its longest losing streak since dropping six straight April 8-13 last year.

Angels third baseman Troy Glaus left with a bruised right shoulder during the third inning. He was moving to his left when pitcher Aaron Sele deflected Julio Lugo’s bunt, and Glaus went down when he tried to stop and switch directions.

Anaheim said X-rays were normal and Glaus was day to day.

The Angels had a runner in scoring position in each of the first three innings, including a man on third with no outs in the third, but failed to score. Anaheim went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position over that stretch.

Bell (2-2), who struck out four, retired 13 straight before back-to-back doubles to Adam Kennedy and David Eckstein in the eighth.

All-Star Lance Carter allowed Anaheim to put runners at the corners when Scott Spiezio walked with one out in the ninth and Shawn Wooten singled.

Jeff DaVanon hit a sacrifice fly and Travis Harper retired Bengie Molina on a grounder for his first save of the season, the fourth of his career. The throw by third baseman Damian Rolls was in the dirt and was scooped up by Travis Lee at first.

Orioles 3, Rangers 2

BALTIMORE – Pat Hentgen took a four-hitter into the seventh inning and B.J. Surhoff homered as the Baltimore Orioles won their fifth straight Monday night, 3-2 over the Texas Rangers.

Jay Gibbons and Jeff Conine also drove in runs for the Orioles, whose winning streak is their longest since a five-game run in May 2001.

Hentgen (2-5) allowed two runs and six hits over 6 1-3 innings to snap a career-high five-game skid.

The right-hander, who was winless since May 17, came in 0-2 with an 8.71 ERA against Texas this season.

Jorge Julio worked the ninth for his 22nd save, the fourth during the Orioles’ current streak. Four of the five wins have been by one run.

Texas used successive two-out RBI singles by Einar Diaz and Michael Young to take a 2-0 lead in the second.

Surhoff led off the third inning with his third home run.

the first since June 12. It was only the fifth homer allowed by R.A. Dickey (4-5) in 48 innings this season.
