HANOVER – Oxford County Democrats met for a picnic supper and meeting on July 17 at the Stonybrook Campground. Wayne Hollingsworth of Freeport represented the Howard Dean presidential campaign, Mike Broderick of Bethel spoke for the John Kerry campaign and Bernard Reiner of Oxford and Tom ORourke of Woodstock spoke for Gen. Wesley Clark and Bob Graham respectively.

Violet Raymond of Congressman Mike Michaud’s Lewiston office presented greetings from the congressman and reported on her visits throughout the county.

Assistant Majority Leader Robert Duplessie of Westbrook gave a legislative update and State Party Chairwoman Dorothy Melanson reported on activities, which include the upcoming Muskie Lobster Bake in August, the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner in November and the 2004 caucuses and convention. Toby Guzowski, House caucus director, spoke on his efforts relating to candidate recruitment and fund-raising.

County Chairwoman Cathy Newell highlighted plans for the coming season of festivals and fairs. She reported on Michaud’s visit to Oxford County on July 12, which included a tour of the Norway Downtown Festival, dinner with the Maine Bike Rally group and attendance at the old-fashioned dance at the Greenwood Town Hall.

The Bethel Democrats prepared a float and booth for Mollyockett Day.

Treasurer Mike Broderick reported on the success of the annual fund to date and encouraged those who have yet to participate to do so. Pam Pace will head a booth at the Dixfield Flea Market in August. Those with items to donate should contact Newell at 875-2116 for information.

India Haynes was elected to represent Oxford County on the credentials committee. The next meeting will be on Thursday, Aug. 21, in Waterford.
