HARRISON – The Scribner’s Mill Preservation Inc. will hold its 11th annual “Back to the Past” celebration of old-time sawmill technology, lumbering and homestead activities on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 2 and 3.
The historic mill is located on Scribner’s Mill Road at the Crooked River just south of the hamlet of Bolsters Mills in the town of Harrison.
This year’s theme will be “From Stump to Shingle.” Tree felling and log twitching will be demonstrated with the assistance of the Brass Knobs 4-H Steer Club under the direction of Mark Winslow.
Participants will have an opportunity to use a cross-cut saw to cut the log to shingle length. Brothers Roland and Tom Scribner will be at the antique machinery to cut and edge the shingles. Shingles will then be branded or stenciled and available for purchase.
In and around the mill there will be exhibits of antique mill machinery turning out dry barrel parts, window sash construction demonstrations and timber framing, The blacksmith shop will offer demonstrations on metal work.
There will be guided tours of the Scribner homestead on the hour and half hour. Butter-making will be demonstrated in the morning and children of all ages will be invited to help churn homemade ice cream in the afternoon.
Artisans will be in the woodshed and barn giving demonstrations throughout the day. This year’s quilt, made by the Scribner sisters, will be displayed in front of the house and raffled off Sunday at 3 p.m.
The children can enjoy old time games, explore a hay maze, have a pillow fight and hunt for pennies in a haystack in the corn house. Ox cart rides will be available throughout the day by the Brass Knobs 4-H Steer Club.
This year the spinners and weavers will be there to help the participants comb out, wash, dye and spin some wool. Once the wool is spun, participants will have an opportunity to use a small loom to weave a small project.
