1913 – 2003

LISBON FALLS – Dorothy Frances Harkness, 89, of Libby Street, died peacefully at her home Monday, July 21.

She was born in Meriden, Conn., on July 29, 1913, the daughter of Earle and Edith Lister Hotchkiss. She was educated in the schools of East Hartford, Conn., where she graduated in 1931. She was married to Paul T. Harkness Jr. on Nov.. 14, 1942 in Hartford, Conn. He died July 4, 1998.

She was employed by the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co. from the time of her graduation from high school until 1943 when she left to become a full time homemaker. She and her husband resided in Unionville, Conn., until Mr. Harkness retired in 1972 when they moved to Ellsworth. In 1994 they moved to Lisbon Falls to be closer to family.

She attended the Lisbon United Methodist Church where she was a member of both the Widows Club and the Women’s Circle. She enjoyed walking her dog and cat several times a day, knitting, reading and for many years summering at her cottage in Steuben. She will be remembered by all that knew her, for her generosity, kindness and great sense of humor.

Survivors include three daughters, Ms. Jane F. Zamanzadeh of Sierra Madre, Calif., Ms. Susan E. Simmons of East Hartford, Conn., and Laura M. and her husband Larry Doble of Lisbon Falls; five grandchildren, Ali Zamanzadeh, Melissa Simmons, Sara Towle and her husband Seth, Katie and Brian Doble; one great-grandson, Robin Towle.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Norman and Donald Hotchkiss.
