WILTON – The Maine Education Opportunity Center helps qualified adults make the transition from unemployment toward a college education. The starting point for all its participants is “MEOC 101: The Essentials of College Planning,” an interactive workshop that outlines the four steps in the college process: admissions, financial aid, career and study skills.
A local program will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, July 24, at the Workforce Development Center in East Wilton. Preregistration is required.
The center also helps adults obtain their adult diploma or General Education Development certificate. All the services are free to participants.

Noels to perform this weekend
LIVERMORE FALLS – Jonathan and Amanda Noel will perform inspirational music at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 26, and 9 a.m. Sunday, July 27, at the Emmanuel Assembly of God.
The Noels have toured with Christian bands such as Fernando Ortega, Margaret Becker and Out of the Grey. Grammy award-winning Jars of Clay has Jonathan’s song “Hands” recorded on a CD.
The Noels have also worked on “Songs 4 Worship” modern CD. The Noels write and record their own songs. For more information, people may phone the church at 897-5400.
Jam-Out concert set for Sunday
FARMINGTON – Area youths and adults are being invited to a concert featuring The Brothahs’ Jam-Out at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at Farmington Baptist Church on Whittier Road.
Featured musicians are Evan Fellman on bass and violin, Lee Fellman on drums and organ, Dan Hayden on electric guitar and Matt Hayden on guitar and lead vocals. They will play some rockin’ music from the Newsboys, Third Day and D.C. Talk.
There is no admission charge and all are welcome.
Galiettas giving concert Sunday
JAY – The Galiettas, a musical family from Thomaston, will give a concert at the 10:30 a.m. morning service on Sunday, July 27, at the Bean’s Corner Baptist Church.
Mike and Stephanie Galietta and their children, Nikki, 16, and Jaime, 13, all sing. Mike plays electric and acoustic guitars, Stephanie plays keyboard and fiddle, Jaime plays keyboard and alto saxophone, and Nikki plays bass.
They recently released their fifth album, “Fresh from the Desert,” featuring original music. Another child, 3-year-old Macy contributes, as do a couple other musicians, Kimberly Prior with her flute and Celia Jones on viola and cello.
The family, which travels as far as Pennsylvania for concerts, has been performing for about 10 years.
Sunday’s concert is free and open to the public. An offering will be taken for the family. Copies of CDs will be available for sale. For more information, people can contact the church at 645-2925.
Group puts on free map program
RANGELEY – The Natural Science Program at the Wilhelm Reich Museum on Dodge Pond Road will host “Orienteering: Learning Basic Map and Compass” presented by a master Maine guide, Ray Reitze Jr. He is founder and director of Earthways School of Wilderness Living in Canaan.
The free program will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at the sheltered classroom.
It with include the use of a compass and topographical map, as well as how to use the sun for natural direction. This workshop is designed for novice hikers and climbers as well as the casual outdoor recreationist. Participants need to bring their own compasses. The Silver brand 2-inch compass is adequate and available at local stores.
Reitze teaches wilderness survival, canoeing and primitive skills. He and his wife, Nancy, run Earthways Guided Canoe Trips and School of Wilderness Living.
Wilton Academy to hold reunion
WILTON – The Wilton Academy reunion will be Saturday, Aug. 9, at Harnden Hall in North Chesterville. The social hour will begin at 5 p.m. and the potluck supper at 6 p.m. These will be followed by a short business meeting and musical entertainment by the Harndens. Those attending are being asked to take a casserole, salad or dessert to share, plus their own beverage and place setting. All who attended Wilton Academy when it was a high school and their guests are welcome.
Wilton Post Office offers new hours
WILTON – The Wilton Post Office will offer new hours of operation, effective Aug. 16. Mondays through Fridays, the new hours for the customer service window will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The lobby hours during the week, for customers just picking up their post office box mail will be 6:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. The post office will continue to be open through the lunch hour.
On Saturdays, the new hours for the customer service window will be 9:30 a.m. to noon; the Saturday lobby hours will be 6:15 a.m. to noon.
Historical Society offers calendars
STRATTON – The Dead River Area Historical Society has just received the new 2004 picture calendars. The cover features Eddie LeClair, who passed away recently at the age of 97.
Other monthly photo highlights are the Flagstaff Hotel and post office around 1900, Deb Sylvester on a trap line about 1940, seventh- and eighth-grades of Stratton School 1951, Herman Hatch, a deputy sheriff during Prohibition in 1930, Mabel Kakhonen at 96, and Flagstaff High School’s graduating Class of 1940. There is also Olive Bradbury’s camp at Flagstaff in 1940; Warren Meyer, Stratton High School boys’ basketball 1959; road construction at the bluffs between Kingfield and Stratton; a Targett family photo taken in 2002; and Gordon Hatch when he was boxing about 1932-1934.
The calendars are available at Pine’s Market, Northland Cash and Fotter’s Market, or they may be purchased by mail for $6 plus $1.25 for postage for each calendar.
