Proceeds will benefit good health and cancer awareness programs.

FARMINGTON – Approximately $17,000 was raised at the annual Health Care Golf Classic held July 14 at the Sugarloaf Golf Club. This year’s festivities included 18 holes of tournament play, a luncheon and awards ceremony, silent auction and raffle.

Proceeds from the tournament, coordinated by Franklin Community Health Network, will benefit the Healthy Community Coalition and the Martha B. Webber Cancer Awareness Fund. Both support good health through prevention and education throughout Franklin Memorial Hospital service area.

This marks the 16th year of the Health Care Golf Classic. Steve Pierce, tournament chairman and member of the FMH/FCHN Board, attributed this year’s success to the generous support of major tournament sponsors, as well as the local and regional businesses that donated 19 items for the silent auction and raffle.

A total of 119 golfers from throughout New England took part in the tournament. All had a chance to win a new Pontiac Grand Am GT automobile from Hight Chevrolet-Geo-Pontiac, as well as Wilson “Fat Shaft” irons, a three-day vacation, and a DVD/CD player in the hole in one contests.

Major sponsors included Synernet, Jordan Lumber, Preti-Flaherty, Androscoggin Bank, HP Cummings Construction, Main-Land Development Consultants and Hight Chevrolet-Geo-Pontiac.

Winners of first place “gross” was Transco’s team of Jason Gall, Laddie Demer, David Brewster and Mark Plummer. Second place went to Androscoggin Bank made up of Paul Soucie, Charles Morrison, Ike Goodwin and Steve Cornelio. Third place went to Tom Weigle, Doug Boink, Charles Jankoski and Bob Giggey representing Team Weigle.

The first place “net” team was made-up of John Scott, Guy Maiorano, Lescar Beane and Norman St. Pierre representing HP Cummings.

Second net went to the Cigna HealthCare team of John Sheehan, Steve Conley, Jeff Merrill, and Scott McGee. The Preti-Flaherty team of John Doyle, Steven Michaud, Joel Davidson and Richard Willett placed third.

Closest to the pin contests were won by Karen Thompson, Jeff Gosselin, Jill Perry and Curtis Haley. Karen Thompson, Casey Catell and Jason Call each won prizes for longest drives.

The Martha B. Webber Cancer Awareness Fund enhances awareness of breast cancer and provides funding to eligible women for related healthcare services and mammograms. The fund memorializes a Carrabassett Valley resident who was a victim of breast cancer.

The Healthy Community Coalition is a community-based health promotion, education and outreach organization based in Farmington that has received statewide recognition for its innovative programs such as the “Peace in Our Families” initiative, the annual community wellness fair, and the mobile health unit.
