NEW GLOUCESTER — Herbal Christmas heirloom ornaments made according to late 18th century tradition will be the focus of a new workshop at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village.

Participants will use fresh herbs from the Shaker gardens to fashion four to six types of ornaments. Betsey-Anne Golon of Common Folk Farm, who is also the herb gardener at Shaker Village, will be the instructor.

The workshop date is Aug. 2. The cost is $25 (materials provided). Pre-registration is required. Telephone 926-4597. Enrollment is limited to 15 people.

A chair caning workshop will also be offered. Participants in that workshop will learn the traditional seven-step method of chair caning at the Sister’s Shop, Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village.

Participants should bring a sound, clean chair that is hand woven (look for holes drilled through the seat and/or back). Fran Faulkner, longtime caning instructor at Shaker Village and in southern Maine, will be the instructor.
