River section could
get new classification
LIVERMORE FALLS – The state is going through a public process to determine what needs to be done and what the costs and effects would be to bring a section of the Androscoggin River up to Class C standards.
The next meeting is at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the Pine Street Arboretum in Augusta.
Department of Environmental Protection biologist Barry Mower said there has been a lot of progress in cleaning up the river but it still doesn’t meet state standards.
“It’s not as good as the Kennebec or Penobscot (other Class C rivers),” Mower said. Some sections of those rivers have been upgraded to Class B.
“They weren’t as bad to start with,” Mower said. And they’re not as big and had fewer mills.
There is technology available to bring the Androscoggin River up to Class C standards, he said, but it would cost.
At times the river doesn’t meet the standards, Deb Garrett, a DEP spokesperson said, and the state is working on that.
For instance, it doesn’t meet some criteria for fishing and swimming standards.
But if DEP decides through the public process and state authorities that it would just cost society too much to meet the standards, Mower said, there could be a new classification yet to be determined.
