PORTLAND – One hundred swimmers will dive into Casco Bay when the 22nd Annual YMCA Peaks to Portland Swim begins Saturday, July 26.

Competitors will swim the 2.4-mile distance from Peaks Island to Portland, not only to put their aquatic skills to the test, but also to raise funds for the Cumberland County YMCA’s annual Y Benefit Drive.

This fund ensures that no one will be turned away from a YMCA program or service due to inability to pay. Last year’s scholarships totaled over $300,000 in support of 1,100 youth and families.

This year’s field will feature newcomer, 15-year-old David Wells of Falmouth. Wells, who is at the minimum age for participating, has been swimming competitively for 10 years. He will be challenging the currrent defending champion and record holder, 16-year-old Sean Flaherty of Scarborough.
